Eric and I like to vote together. I have class tonight so we went this morning as soon as the polls opened. I expected a line out the door but we got there about 7:15AM and it wasn't bad at all. It took us all of 30 minutes to check in and vote.

I have to say I've enjoyed our voting process this time. Proposition 8 - the amendment to the state constitution to ban same sex marriage has created quite a stir. The corners near our closest pharmacy and grocery store have been populated with people holding signs that say "HONK FOR NO ON 8!" Plenty of people have been honking, including me.

I was in the pharmacy on Sunday talking to the checkout clerk about why all the shouting and honking was going on when a man got in line behind me in line had a very sour look on his face. "Let's not discuss it!" he said emphatically. I explained I was just telling her what all the noise was about. Then he went on to discuss it saying it was creating chaos.

Funny, when I went through the intersection it wasn't chaotic, it was just noisy. Everyone kept on their way honking if they agreed and being rewarded with cheers from the crowd on the corner. I mentioned that with a smile on my face. Ooh he didn't like that! I gently added, "I think I can see we're on opposite sides of this issue so you're right that we probably shouldn't discuss it." I thought he was going to burst a blood vessel from the look on his face but when I smiled and wished him and the clerk a good day, he relaxed a bit.

I honked even more on my way back home. Then I noticed the corner I was stopped at waiting for the light had mostly "Yes on 8" people, quietly and grimly holding their signs. One "No on 8" person stood in their midst so I yelled out the window, "NO ON 8!" She replied with, "NO ON 8! WHY DISCRIMINATE?" Last night after class, only the "NO ON 8" people were left on the corners. I honked again. Lots of people were honking. I know our area is much more liberal than the central valley. I sure hope we can stop that hateful amendment.

I've done my part. Now to wait.

I'm with you - FL has their own stupid version of this on the ballot too.

i'm glad you voted AND i'm glad you honked. With a son, being gay i think it's important that my friends support this 'NO on 8'.
Honk away hon.

I have gay friends who love each other just as much as Eric and I love each other. I just can't see denying them marriage and all the legal protections that come with it.

My gay friends helped me to see it that way. It's just wrong for a family to be able to push a life partner away from a person's deathbed because they didn't accept their child's life as it was. It's wrong for a couple to break up and their children to lose a parent altogether because the law doesn't protect parental rights for the non-birth mother.

Anyone with a heart should know this.

(((hugs))) back. I'm so sad about this today. I can't find any of the No on 8 sites saying anything about fighting it in the courts but it's still early. I think we can still have the amendment declared unconstitutional and thrown out. I so hope so!
