Lee-Roy's x-ray looks exactly like the one he had in March. Excellent! I think we gave the vet the wrong impression when we were telling her how well he was doing. His normal behavior sounds hyper to her and we thought he was gaining weight but he has actually lost some since March, so she added an extra test to his senior blood panel to check for hyperthyroidism. I guess we thought he was gaining weight because his back doesn't feel like a washboard anymore. His muscle tone is improved, so maybe that's it. He's eating like a horse and even demanded an extra feeding a few days ago. We gave it to him.

We made an appointment to have his and Cactus's teeth cleaned on Wednesday and then got a quote. It's over $400 per cat??? YIKES! It turns out about $100 of that is for stuff we probably won't need and for optional stuff we find ridiculous, like a tooth care kit for brushing their teeth at home. Riiiight. We are not likely to try to brush the teeth of a cat with scalpel claws or of a cat who is barely tame. Maybe we'll do Cacti now and Lee-Roy later.

Joyce joined Karen and me to travel the 40 miles to the party. We didn't plan this, but we all wore our Boomer Babes t-shirts! I also dressed mine up with the chain Sue gave me. I was going to make artichoke dip but the can I had in the cupboard had a swollen look to it. Since I don't want to poison an entire party with botulism, it went into the trash. I picked up two flavors of hummus and some chips on the way to Karen's house. We had a lovely visit on the way there and on the way back. At the party, only one other person from the Disneyland trip showed up. Gina, the one who drove me totally nuts was there with her husband. I wondered if she was so hesitant and hyper because he was an asshole, and toward the end of the party the following conversation happened with the last eight people still there.

I was talking about how cool it was to work at NASA as an intern and mentioned that Hangar 1 has to come down.

AH (asshole): Bullshit.

me: No, it's really toxic. For fireproofing, they dipped the siding into PCB laden asphalt, covered it with asbestos and coated that in PCB laden asphalt then painted it with lead paint. It has to go.

AH: That's total bullshit.

me: You don't understand. Even with the sealant they painted on it two years ago, PCB's are leaching out at 18,000 parts per million every time it rains and the EPA limits are only 5 or 6 parts per million.

AH: That's bullshit. That doesn't hurt anything.

me: Yes it does. It drains into marshland and it's poisoning the endangered species there.

AH: That's bullshit. I don't believe it. Did you know there's a sister hangar in Ohio?

me: Yes, the people in charge of that one were at the meeting. They coated theirs with rubber but they can't use it for anything because the inside is too toxic. They're waiting to see what we do with ours to see what to do with theirs.

AH: That's bullshit.

me: The experts have measured it all. It's true.

AH: Bullshit.

me: I know the people measuring this one and they're straight shooters. They know their stuff. I believe them.

AH: I don't. It's all bullshit. They don't have to tear it down.

me: By LAW they do.

AH: It's still bullshit.

me: Believe what you want. I'm going with the experts.

He was spoiling for a fight about it. Gina was looking extremely uncomfortable and embarrassed. Everyone else was uncomfortable, too.

Someone changed the subject for a few minutes, but he jumped in and tried to re-engage the battle. I can't remember what he said, but I just repeated he could believe what he wanted. I was going by the facts presented by the experts.

Jerk. He does seem to love Gina a lot, at least he does in front of everyone.

The rest of the party was lots of fun. Nice people. Our t-shirts got lots of attention. :)

Well I am glad you had a good time at the party.. except for AH trying to make an A out of himself.

LOL on the T-shirts.

You know, I didn't let him get to me. I was calm and conversational the whole time. I shrugged when I told him to believe what he wanted. Whatever. LOL I think that ticked him a bit.

It was more the inference that he's an idiot who doesn't want to confused by the facts. My shrug was dismissive. He isn't significant enough to have his opinion be important to me. Power freaks HATE that!

$400! per cat!!! That seems a bit more than a little ridiculous. We take Hamncheez to PetsMart and at the most it costs $60, and that's with grooming, and bathing her. It only costs $60 because she is a long-haired cat, otherwise it'd be $40.

They use dental equipment and everything? Do they knock them out for the dental work? Most of the charges are due to the anethesia.

No, they just do it with a toothbrush. Even with dental equipment and anesthesia $400 seems excessive.

well, there is a cheaper place but they don't treat the cats with respect.

Don't you love it when people can make such witty and thoughtful conversation?

LOL, I especially love it when I'm able to stay calm and conversational. He couldn't get me upset no matter how many times he said bullshit. teehee!

Oh My, wasn't he the nicest person to have a conversation with.

400$ to clean the teeth of a cat?? Are they out of their mind????
Is it really necessary to do that anyway? It seems unnatural to me.

Yes it's necessary. Tartar builds up over the years and they can get abscessed and need to come out. I ignored them with Scampi years ago and they had to pull a tooth and she got pretty sick from the infection.
