Eric had a class out by Moffett field a couple of weeks ago and came up with a wonderful alternative route. Instead of taking 30 to 40 minutes to get there as it would on the freeways (280 to 85), I took the San Tomas expressway to a different freeway (101) and got there in 20 minutes. I tried to allow a full hour to get there and get through the gate and as always I ran about 10 minutes behind. Still, I got to the gate a full 30 minutes before orientation started. Check in was quick because I was early. Two people I'd met during interview day were there too. How fun that people I'd chatted with that day also made the program!
My favorite song was playing when I got to the guard post. Singing along to Linda Ronstadt's "Livin' in the USA" is my way of waking up and cheering up if I'm down. Chuck Berry was riffing as I told the guard I was one of the new interns. The guard I spoke to is an older black man, just the age to have driven his parents crazy with Chuck Berry records. He got a big grin on his face when he heard the music. :D
Orientation was filling out lots of forms with informational talks before, during and after. Dire warnings about misuse of government equipment and facilities were given. Big Brother will be watching, we were warned. When at work, do not surf the net. Do not IM. Do not play games. Do not ebay, gamble or download anything unauthorized. Do not run your business or fund-raise. Do not engage in organizing protests against the government. Do not give your email address to people who will send "fun" emails. So, I won't be blogging or catching up on you good people from there. Oooh no, definitely not.
I had to sign a promise to be patriotic. Ok. No Bush bashing at work. I'll have to do any subversive work I want to do from home. HA! Like I'd really do any.
They're going to run a background check on me. I half-way expect to be let go when they see the letters and emails I've sent to various presidents telling them they're stupid for whatever. LOL Not really. I wasn't threatening at all in any of them.
Now for the good part. I HAVE to attend four hours of seminars every quarter. That's NASA scientists talking about their work and discoveries. The only down side to that is I can't tell anybody what I heard. I'll be getting to hear things that haven't been published yet! Yes, I signed a non-disclosure form. The best part? The seminars count as work hours. I'm going to get paid for attending lectures I would be willing to pay to hear!
There's a picnic later in the summer, all kinds of groups for every thing from sailing to bowling and I have access to a full gym, complete with trainers.
After I finished orientation, I went to find my new boss. I'm starting on Tuesday and for the summer I'll work from 8am to 5:00pm. I like him a lot already.
**edit** As I drove out the gate, the guard who checked me in saw me across the guard shack, smiled a huge smile and waved goodbye. I think I have a new friend!
Then I went to Foothill to finish my student employment paperwork with them. Nobody told me I had to have six units of classes Spring quarter to avoid taking classes in the summer. I only had five. I'd already signed up for the CO-OP class for students who weren't taking other classes. Now I have to drop that one and sign up for the other AND get into two units of classes by the middle of tomorrow afternoon.
UGH. I didn't want to have to do both. Luckily, there's the perfect class on the schedule for Saturday mornings. It's one that will help me with my new job. I've emailed the instructor and NASA to get add codes for the classes I'll need instead of what I've got.
Maybe I'll take a nap now while I wait for the return emails.
