I've got an offer to be a secret shopper and report on stores in my area. They'll give me a $1,000 gift card to spend at the designated store. I have to spend 90% of it there and report on store cleanliness, helpfulness of staff, etc.

This sounds too good to be true - especially with our worn-out bathroom fixtures and dead garbage disposal, ooh and the shed we need in the back yard for the mower and...

I've put in false info to see the offers. Two of them is all they require and there are two I'm willing to do. I'm tempted, but won't go for it without more information.

I got a spam the other day that looked like it was a good deal for Secret Shopping, but when I read the fine print I found two things that made me throw it away. One was that they would in fact be selling my name, address, phone number and email address to all of their friends in addition to continuing to email me. The other was that it looked like I had to spend my own money on whatever I was supposed to be buying and would not be reimbursed for it (which I guess doesn't preclude me from returning it but still; that doesn't do me any good at a restaurant!). I think then for payment you got a GC or something like that.

That is the downfall, for sure. I can always block the emails. I can give them my cell number because it's usually dead anyway.

From what I thought I read, they send you the first gift card after you take two of their special offers. Only then do you shop. They send you gift cards to wherever you're supposed to go and you have to spend 90% of it. Maybe I'll contact them to clarify that before I sign up for real.

What are the "special offers"? Is this like the whole get a free ipod thing where you had to sign up for a credit card or something and then get ten friends to do it, too?

There's a pet supply place I'm willing to spend $7.95 with and Blockbuster online rental membership. The usual video professor junk is there. The other offers are decent and not horribly expensive.

oh, and I found an LJ belonging to a member of secret shopper. I've asked her for the low-down on it.

oo-oo! I did secret shopping with a friend once! We got to go to SF. It was great fun. But I agree - it's best to look into it closer.

but, oo-oo! secret shopping!

i never heard of secret-shopping. But i guess that's normal. It must be something typical for your country i assume.

i did read the comments on this posting tho, and you better read the small print too.
