Haven't posted much because I didn't have energy for much, including writing about what's going on.

Family reunion was last Saturday. I still felt awful which probably fueled my irritation with Ed. I was determined to serve again so he didn't take control. But being me, I put on my best acting abilities and was friendly to him. He pulled me aside before things got started and wanted to make sure I understood the emails I got from him after the bank incident. He sent me two, the first one asking for a copy of the by-laws and a second one that said he would refuse being nominated for the position of Secretary/Treasurer. Ha! Like I'd even nominate him after the way he was acting! His emails dissolved my anger because I was so amused by them. I guessed he was pissed that he couldn't do things his way and so he didn't want to do them at all. This man is around 70. You'd think he would have learned that lesson by now! LOL

Since the bank day, I'd finally gotten a person at the IRS who knew what she was talking about. I wrote down her ID number so I could get her again if I needed to. They have finally gotten all the old records into a computer system, but she refused to search for our family association name without a zip code. Since there were two people who might have applied and they both moved around in the early 1970s when I think the application had been submitted, I had no clue what their zip codes were at the time. I guessed four that might have been the ones, but none came up with a match. She then suggested I simply apply for a new one and switch it on the bank account. The application could be done online and give me a number immediately! How easy is that? I did it and printed out the page showing the number. Then I looked at the state requirements and discovered all we needed was to have our association name registered with the state. That costs $10. First I searched to see if it came up. Nope. It had expired or something. To spend money, I needed approval from the family at large, so I printed out the application to take to the meeting. According to the "Doing Business In California" that's all a non-profit for family association would require.

As soon as I got to the reunion, I handed Ed the by-laws. When Ed talked to me, he said he didn't want to be involved with trying to unscramble the bank account problems and I had the news that it was nearly unscrambled already. He was surprised. I told him that I'd hit a brick wall with it a few times and my intinctive response is to set it aside when my frustration level was too high. His tendency is to clamp on and fight everyone until it's fixed. He admitted that he didn't have an attachment to the history of the association and he recognized that I did, and that he now understood that I'd been given strict instructions by my dying father not to change the way it was organized. I have to carry on with that. We both recognized that we are very different people and that makes it difficult for us to work together. We need to communicate better. He said he'd be willing to be Secretary but not Treasurer. The by-laws I'd handed him when I first arrived showed the two offices as being separate. He said he'd suggest splitting them again to make the job less work, and possibly then more attractive. I was game for that. He's good at writing. I don't want him in charge of the money. He said he hoped I'd continue as president because I had the personality for it and he was more of an accountant type. He said he thinks the president needs to have charisma and a connection to the history of the organization to bring people in. Wow! A compliment from Ed?

Eddie, the VP, called my cell phone in the morning and told me he had a wedding to attend in Sacramento so he and his family wouldn't be attending the reunion. Our total attendance was 10 people, including my Uncle Bob's ex-wife, Aunt Karen. We kept her after the divorce! LOL

I was re-elected President, Eddie was re-elected Vice President and the offices of Secretary and Treasurer were again split into two positions. Ed is Secretary and Uncle Bob is Treasurer. He and I will be the signers on the account. Cool. Uncle Bob is a typical laid-back Vermillion. The fact that he has the same last name as one of the deceased signers (my dad) will help the bank feel good about changing the account. On Tuesday, I talked to the bank manager to explain what was going on and to make sure what I was doing would satisfy the legal needs. He needs the confirmation letter from the IRS I'll receive this week (they said 15 days) or next week if that was "working" days. I emailed all the officers with the news. Maybe I'll have Ed draft a letter stating the board's wishes for the bank account signers. Uncle Bob said he didn't want to be the only signer because he tends to go on nomadic trips in his RV across the nation. He's often gone four months at a time. He used to send us emails of his experiences but found it too time-consuming trying to find an internet connection. Darn. They were amusing. Uncle Bob is quite a character.

This last week I began a long-term sub job at an elementary school, but that's another post.

Sounds like Ed might have screwed on his head a little better after some mulling over things. :)

It's good to hear from you! I was thinking of giving you a call to see if you were okay, but decided against it just in case you were cocooning, as I didn't want to disturb you.

Controlling people are so annoying. We have a particularly officious PTA president this year. I was the secretary two years running and termed out, and then became the parliamentarian this year. She and I have butted heads a few times because she makes blanket statements about stuff and I question her. She's alienated lots of people (our PTA membership is down from 500 to 200 members since last year, and I think it's because of her, frankly). At one PTA meeting when I asked her something she actually said, and I quote, "Honey, don't worry about it." I looked at her and said, "Please don't call me 'sweetie' or 'honey.'" She was never quite the same after that =)

This year, she actually e-mailed me to tell me that she didn't think the parliamentarian needed to attend the meetings because she could handle that! I know it's because I don't kow-tow to her. I asked her if she was trying to limit attendance? and if so, I would like to know why, since membership was at an all time low...

She denied that, of course. I almost resigned my position but decided that if I did, it would grant her a victory I didn't want her to have. But blech. Controlling people are a big pain.

you really should think that people being 70 have learned to use their head.
I'm glad it all worked out.
