Bad mommy! Bad!
Jun. 29th, 2007 02:35 amScampi's claws have been a big problem for years. She hates to have anyone mess with her paws yet with her back problems, she can't maintain them herself.
She nips me when I try to clip more than one at a time. Her right front paw is especially hard to get to. She has her comfort positions and that paw is never in a good position for me to see anything.
Tonight I wanted to get those claws clipped so when she got her dose of baby aspirin and glucosamine chondritin mixed in baby food, I also added a kitty dose of valium we have from Lee-Roy. After it had time to kick in, I got her out of her hidey hole under the coffee table and snuggled her on my lap to get her to relax. I brushed her and held her like a baby. Then I got three of her paws clipped. She squawked a bit but mostly let me do it.
That right front paw was a problem. It was too close to my face for me to see and her toe fur is long and thick. I had to wedge her between my legs on her back to get to it. I couldn't really see what I was doing and she was fighting to get away. Luckily, the valium had her attempts very weak. She hissed and growled when I clipped one very long claw. I was still able to clip the rest. Then I felt wetness on my hand. I'd clipped into the quick on that one claw. She was bleeding. There was also a bit of claw stuck in her paw pad. That one had gotten dangerously long. No wonder I clipped the quick! I pulled the tip out of her paw pad. No blood there. A chunk of claw sheath came off the claw stump above it. I grabbed a napkin and held it against the bloody claw. She grumbled and tried to get away. I dabbed at the blood on her paw but it didn't do any good. She'll have to clean it.
I let her get down and she only had one small click on one paw as she limped away from me. I'll get that one later. She went into the kitchen and looked at me. I knew what she was wanting. Yes kitty. OK. She deserves a treat after I was so mean to her. She got a night time blob of whipped cream. That seemed to be an acceptable apology.
Now I'm worried about the bleeding claw. She has aspirin in her system to thin her blood. I hope she'll clot, poor old kitty!
