Does anyone else feel annoyed that Christmas is pushed out right after Halloween these days? Didn't they used to wait until the day after Thanksgiving?
First things first. Thanksgiving is my focus. I volunteered to bring wild rice dressing and apple cobbler to our feast at Uncle Jim and Aunt June's house in San Francisco. Aunt June is from Minnesota and used to make wild rice dressing every year. She's having to cut back a bit because her energy level is dropping with age. She still will brine and roast the turkey, make mashed potatoes, traditional bread stuffing and wonderful gravy.
After I volunteered my dishes and got approval, I went to the store only to find my usual grocery store no longer carries wild rice. HUH? I tried a bigger store thinking the small one just doesn't have space for everything. Nope. Safeway no longer carries wild rice. I thought about specialty stores. Trader Joe's! Out front they had a bin of baskets. My fruit basket got infected with peach mold and was thrown out. I grabbed one the right size. Only $4! Score! In the rice aisle all they had were packets of pre-cooked wild rice, and only a few of those. I grabbed two for the dressing and one to eat for a test ahead of time. These were cooked in water. It wouldn't taste right if I didn't cook it in chicken broth! Adding boullion might work... *sigh* A tin of peppermint bark jumped into my hand on the way to checkout. Eric loves peppermint candy of any kind.
On the way home I passed Albertsons, another grocery chain. It wouldn't hurt to try there. SUCCESS! They had two different brands. The usual brand I bought was there in a box. I'd had bugs infest one in the past, so I chose the other brand that was sealed in a thick plastic pouch. Picked up the chicken broth. I still need to check the recipe for the other ingredients.
Yay! Aunt June's recipe of wild rice dressing will be on the Thanksgiving table! Eric's mom's recipe of apple cobbler is another favorite of everyone, particularly Eric. :)
Oh and our earthquake kit will now have the addition of pre-cooked wild rice to the food supply - if the packets say it will last a while. Fancy food for a disaster, ya think?
Today's quest: The rest of the stuff I need for Thanksgiving and all of our needs for the next week. Shopping is too crazy the last few days before a major holiday.
