Frustrations with my class
Jul. 31st, 2005 07:36 amLast Friday, my mentor from NASA took his girlfriend to see Eddie Money play at Santa Cruz Beach boardwalk and didn't show up in class on Saturday. Naturally, our instructor needed his expertise and we got stuck near the beginning of the chapter 8 labs. Our poor instructor was sick. I didn't know that. All I knew was the file sharing didn't work between our systems the way the book said it would and I kept catching glimpses of him but he was gone most of the time. Andy and his wife were there but were sick from a very nasty lung virus so they left as soon as they got stuck. After about an hour of deleting the file folder and going through the whole process of setting up advanced sharing permissions suddenly two of my neighbors could get to my system but I couldn't get to anyone else's. The rest of the labs for the chapter required the file sharing to be functional and chapter 9 changed permissions again, so I couldn't very well skip over that one part and go back. When my pencil ripped through the paper of the page as I wrote "CAN'T ACCESS ANYONE'S!!!!! and I was close to either throwing the book across the room or bursting into tears, I decided to leave.
This week, I couldn't get myself to do all the reading. We're doing three chapters per week and I got through 1.5. Next week is our final week of class so I need to finish reading for that, too.
In class, Mike was there. Only about half the people who were there last week showed up. I sat down to start where I'd left off. Still couldn't get to anyone's. When the instructor asked if everyone was at lab 10.1 I said I was still at 8.2. "Oh," he said, "I said to skip chapter 8."
"That must have been after I got mad and left last week," I replied. I scurried through most of chapter 9 until we needed to work with a partner on chapter 10. Parts of these labs didn't work either. My lab partner and I agreed it was hard to fully understand what they were trying to teach us when it didn't work. We wondered if it's the old patched up computers or the instructor not setting the server up right or what? I'm not very happy with this class. The instructor is a very nice guy, but he speaks so softly I can't hear him and I'm in the front row. He knows people can't hear him but he doesn't try to speak louder unless you call out "I can't hear you!" and then he'll be louder for half a sentence. So I mostly ignore his lectures and work on the labs. Trying to hear what he's saying is an exercise in frustration. He's just repeating what the book says anyway.
He gave us a take home final to do by next week. Ugh. Maybe I'll go back to bed. I woke up at 7am this morning for some odd reason. This is my one morning to sleep in.
