The engineer who showed it to us says when the old man who keeps it going retires or dies, they'll have to replace it with a modern version.

thanks for sharing

and you are right that is very cool indeed. I can't even imagine trying to run one of theose "old" computers anymore.

They can't get parts and only the old man knows how to run it. LOL

and here we were thinking I was bad to still have a 8086 that I refuse to part with ----

Hey, that's a collector's item! :)

[identity profile] buddyhope.livejournal.com 2005-07-21 01:10 pm (UTC)(link)
and if it still turns on, it has the first three poetry books i published for friends on it....... and only a 5 1/4 drive so no real way to transfer anything LOL LOL LOL

since i don't envy the job of retyping it all, I just pretend they are safe and fine on there.... LOL.... hee hee

collectors item, huh... i never thought of using that excuse. Hubby says it should be a boat anchor.

I have a system with a combination 5 1/4 and 3.5 drive. I think it's my old 486 that hasn't been used in years. Want me to see if I can fire it up so we can get those poetry book files onto something more modern?

If the system is dead, I could always send you the drive.

[identity profile] buddyhope.livejournal.com 2005-07-21 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
nah..... i am not even sure my 8086 will turn on .... it has been in storage since before the millenium LOL....... and storage means at my parents place which is a 9 hour drive away.... somehow when I get there, there is always more important stuff to do than check if it has really survived...... as long as I don't check I can believe all is well LOL LOL LOL

[identity profile] sugarplumkitty.livejournal.com 2005-07-22 03:53 am (UTC)(link)
of course, you could probably mount the drive in a newer computer!

[identity profile] buddyhope.livejournal.com 2005-07-22 04:04 am (UTC)(link)
true -- probably could.......... ya think xp would like a hard drive that is 20M..... hmmmm... and that was HUGE back then...... funny to think how far computers have come in ummmmmmmmmm 20 years I guess it would be..... almost

[identity profile] sugarplumkitty.livejournal.com 2005-07-22 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
lol! My first hard drive was in my 8088 and was also 20M. :)

They have lots of old stuff, but this one is still in use!
