Interviews at Nasa/Ames

I had two interviews that were one after the other, so I'm done and home. I didn't need the portfolio as it turned out. They didn't have any art positions open.
The first is the one I hope I get!
Systems Administration - They keep the computers in the system up and running. It includes setting up and repairing computers, configuring the network addressing for each one and troubleshooting with the non-techie users. I'm a natural for this one and it is exactly what I'm learning in class right now. There was one name on the interview sheet but I was interviewed by the entire team minus the one female who was missing for some reason. It was a very fun interview with them shooting technical questions at me. I had to answer questions about subnetting, troubleshooting and dealing with users. The subnetting was a little rough but I sailed through troubleshooting and dealing with users. There were two trick questions thrown at me that I caught. Hopefully there weren't more. When they asked me things I didn't know after the pace picked up, I laughed and said, "Hey guys, I'm just learning this stuff!" I could see me working there for a year. I fit in. The last question surprised me. One of the guys said he just had to ask this, "Scamperdoo????"
"Ah," I said, "You've been to my website." Smiles broke out around the room. All of them had except one. I explained that her name was Scamp when we started out but it had evolved as pet names do and it was my husband that came up with Scamperdoo. When the one guy was still bewildered, I said that she was our 14 year old manx cat we'd rescued when we were dating and that she was our little sweetie. There were smiles all around. They said they liked my art and my voices. :)
Database/Administrative assistant - This wouldn't be a bad one if I don't get the first job. The job is helping the person who keeps track of all the large dollar equipment and furnishings. There's a lot to do entering new stuff into the system, doing the paperwork to get rid of old stuff and finding everything at inventory time. Shipping and receiving are part of the job. There's some lifting but I'm encouraged to ask for help if things are too heavy. They really want to document the procedures and protocols and publish it on a website. That would be my task if I want it. It's not what I want to do long-term, but who knows where it could lead? I'd have to put on my office worker mask but that's not a bad thing. I could handle it for a year.
I'll go where the wind blows me. As they said at the start of the day, anyone who doesn't get in now will be considered for the next round in January.
I'll know on or by June 16th whether I get either position.

Date: 2005-06-07 11:09 pm (UTC)I forgot to mention in the Admin job that we got onto the track of mysteries when talking about finding equipment that moved. Then we got to books and authors and we all love the same books. We gave each other new authors to check out. LOL
