Our house has gone through various states of disarray, so I know just how you feel. Generally the only time we do clean up is for company, maybe twice a year. When things got real bad, house-wise, it really started to get to me, so I decided that I was going to have to find storage space. I started to use the attic and closets a little better, get rid of stuff, and get a little more organized. I leave Darby's office alone, so that we don't have conflicts, and just try to keep the place in good enough shape that clean up for guests isn't too traumatic. That's what I needed to be comfortable, but you need to figure out what you need to be comfortable. Don't let anyone make you feel bad, it's your house and you and Eric are the ones that need to like it.
Just remember Dust Bunnies make good pets, require no feeding and don't claw your furniture. Name 'em and you've got a pretty workable solution!
