Vet day for the girl kitties
Oct. 25th, 2008 08:30 pmWe had last Saturday scheduled and I depended upon the girls all crashing for afternoon naps in the house, but the time came to crate them and not one could be found. Scampi was even missing! Naturally, she reappeared just after I hung up from rescheduling the vet appointment to today.
Last night, when the girls were all in the house, I closed the cat door and went outside to round up Loki. I didn't think it would be fair to lock him out so all the kitties spent the night inside. Squeakers was quite upset. It was a nice warm night which is perfect for her and Loki to romp in the moonlight. They had to settle for romping in the house instead.
Loki asked to get out after breakfast so I let him out. He likes to nap in the backyard bushes during the day.
The appointment went well. The vet I wasn't too happy with has moved on. There is no regular vet there anymore and thus, an ornery office staff person has banned Henry, the mascot cat, to the back room because she doesn't like him. We were sad. We like Henry. I told her it was bad PR to ban Henry when so many people like him. She was flippant about it. I don't like her much.
Scampi will get some pain meds to try. She's in a lot of pain these days and because she's vomiting periodically, I don't want to up her aspirin dose. We're going to try something else when they find a pharmacy that will fill the prescription. They couldn't get any urine out of her so she gets to spend Thursday with them to get a sample for testing. She got her Rabies vaccination and no others. At her advanced age of 17, she's not likely to contract FeLV or Distemper anymore. She's down to 10 pounds. Another pound lost. :(
Miss Cactus got her first senior blood panel along with all of her vaccinations. The vet said she looked great! Yeah, Miss Cactus is a healthy and hearty girl. She'll be feeling yucky for a day or two. She gave them urine, so she's set for a year. She's also slimmer than last year, 11 pounds for her, too. She's playing more with Squeakers and Loki, so she's more fit than last year.
Squeakers also got all of her vaccinations and a clean bill of health, as we expected. The vet offered to do a baseline blood test but we declined. She had plenty of blood tests in the last year. The last ones were perfect so that can be her baseline. She's 8.5 pounds now! That's double her weight from last year. We were expecting Satan cat when it was time for her temperature but she's relaxed a bit on that. She growled and squirmed a little but not too badly! Yay!
Squeakers was so cute. We opened all the crates once we were in the exam room. The two more experienced girls hid behind their blankets. Squeak came out to investigate. When they took Scampi away for her blood tests, we waited quite a while before the vet came back. Squeakers tried to get into Cacti's crate and when she got the evil eye, lifted her paw. I gave her the kitty's variation of Stop! by saying "Aaah! No hitting" so she ducked into Scampi's empty crate under Cacti's. A few minutes later after running a few more laps between Eric and me for reassuring pets, she climbed into Cacti's crate. She must have been squished up against Cacti's face but there wasn't a sound in protest. The two of them completely filled the crate. Baby Squeak is getting big!
Each cat was taken to the back for vaccinations and we were a few minutes without any cats after Squeakers was taken away. Scampi and Cactus are so gentle and docile that we were amused by the fighting and fussing Squeakers gave the vet as she carried her out the door. What a feisty thing Squeakers is!
Scampi was put down and tried all three carriers before she settled in her big "safe place" carrier. We leave that one open on the floor at home. It's Scampi's hangout. We like it for her because she doesn't bend very well and she can turn around in it without hurting herself.
Cactus came back to us and immediately joined Scampi. Then the tech remembered they'd forgotten one vaccination and hauled her back out. :( I took the opportunity to close Scampi's carrier because I didn't want her jostled by another panicky cat in there for the ride home. Besides, that's 22 pounds of cats in one carrier and Eric really didn't want to try to carry it.
Eric had a flat tire yesterday so his car was in the shop getting new tires. The vet appointment took longer than it should have so I had to drop him off at the car place on the way home because they were about to close.
I got the cats home and took them out of the car one at a time, setting the carriers on the lawn and opening the door to let them out. Loki was waiting for me, probably wondering where everybody was. He checked each of them out as they walked toward the house.
Our neighbor (the old one) was saying goodbye to a couple by their car. The three of them watched the process with amusement. The two older girls were anxious for me to open the front door so they could go in. Ah home! Scampi hasn't napped in her carrier since we got home, opting instead for either her kitty cave under the coffee table or the folded blanket next to the carrier.
Now to find our identification number for the City from Loki's licensing paperwork from last Spring. We didn't get the license renewal notices from the animal control people this year for Scampi and Cactus. Or if we did, they were mixed in with junk mail that went directly into the recycle. We're late... again. Oh well. We were waiting for Squeakers' Rabies vaccination this year to register her, so it's time.
