We bought our original recliners with my Christmas bonus of 1994, so they're plenty old. Thanks to a rescue who wanted to own Eric and started marking his chair and Lee-Roy who owned Eric and didn't want the rescue around marking her marks and the escalating behavior that continued after the rescue was found a new home, both chairs were ruined despite the heavy use of enzyme cleaner.
We were going to wait for Lee-Roy to die to buy new chairs, knowing he'd just mark any new furniture we got. Unfortunately, he died when I was out of work. There wasn't quite enough money to get by much less buy new furniture. Besides, Eric is so cheap that he didn't want to spend money on something if we had something that was still functional. His chair was making weird noises but he could still make it work.
So last winter, he was getting up from his chair when it made a loud thump and tilted to one side. The metal of the mechanism had sheared from the chair support. Instead of propping it up on a block of wood or something, he started dismantling it. At one point, he needed wrenches and asked me to get them. I gave him a look that told him I thought he was being crazy and got them for him. Once it was all in pieces, he hauled the seat part into the covered patio so Chloe could sleep on it if she wanted and put the back and the mechanics in the garage, blocking the one aisle we had going from the back of the garage to the front. Cactus sleeps on the back. Her fur is all over it.
He put his computer desk chair in place of his recliner with an umbrella yard chair for his feet. The lack of arm support caused him a lot of pain, so his computing at home dropped. He started spending more time in the bedroom reading.
At first, I tried to get him to go to holiday sales to buy a new chair but we both like to laze about in the mornings on weekends and he likes to take afternoon naps. By the time he wakes up the stores are closed. As his pain increased, I've started asking him every weekend I felt up to it but he just wants to take his naps.
On our anniversary weekend I'm so glad we had Friday and Monday off, because Monday he was rested enough to be able to skip that nap and go shopping. I'd researched brands that had chairs for big and tall people thinking his chair broke because he's a big burly guy. His side of the bed is all ruined, too... as usual. My side is still OK. He's just too heavy for things that are built for average people. He also did his research and wanted to check out the Lazy Boy store nearby before we went anywhere else. They are one of the best brands. I was concerned they might also be one of the most expensive.
The way I figured it would go is he'd find a chair to fit him and I'd find a chair to fit me and we'd get them in the same fabric. Oddly enough, we liked the exact same chair. It has fabric the whole way from the seat to the footrest so it won't chew up my laptop's power cable the way my old chair did. I like blue chairs but the blue fabric was solid dark blue and cat hair would show up really well. We chose mottled brown. It still goes with the couch and walls, so that's OK.
**EDIT**
Oh, I forgot to mention, these chairs were marked down a lot PLUS they were 10% off the sales price AND no sales tax that day! Woot!
**END EDIT**
Today they delivered them about 10AM. We spent last night and this morning clearing clutter and moving tables and chairs out of the way. I scrubbed the floor this morning, took the opportunity to also clear cobwebs from hard-to-reach places and wash the window sill behind the chairs.
At the same time, the cable guy showed up. When the signal was so awful Wednesday night that I couldn't watch America's got talent and was going to miss the 4-year-old contestant sing, I called Comcast and told them it had to get fixed this time or we were switching to Direct TV. I told them the saga of repair people and sections of replaced cable and cable boxes switched out and insisted they replace the cable from the pole to the house. As much as we're paying per month for cable, they certainly could afford to replace the cable that would cost less that our monthly fee if they wanted to keep us.
I did get to watch that adorable little girl sing after all. They had me take the cable box out of the loop and connect the cable to our TV. No On Demand or special digital features, but we had watchable basic analog cable.
The cable guy discovered the squirrels had chewed up our cable at the pole and that was why we had such a bad signal. It's beautiful and clear now on ALL channels! Woohoo!
I'm still getting used to my chair. It has clicking ratchets for the different foot and back positions. I have to go all the way up and back to get back to sitting upright with my feet down. That's going to take some training for Scampi. The old chair let me go any direction and didn't click. She hasn't accepted the new chair yet. She's hiding in the back yard avoiding medication.
It's really hot today. Guess we'll get our scents onto our chairs really well! That should help Scampi accept mine.
