Friday was a very long day. I couldn't sleep so I got up and went to the hospital where J was having his foot straightened.* His foster mom A and I went to breakfast and spent most of the day together, catching up and clearing up misunderstandings. It turns out the days she thought she needed J picked up from school will have him still at home with his foot elevated.

I left after the surgeon talked to us about how well his surgery went. J was going to be in recovery for an hour or so. I had some errands I needed to run so I went to do them. Baby still had her collar on properly, I got a prescription, dropped off my mom's handicap placquard that was still in my car from the Emergency day and grabbed some lunch. I found a crossword puzzle book and mechanical pencil to go with the kitty get well card Eric and I signed for him, then headed back.

He was pale and sleeping. A was reading. I quietly sat down and we started to chat again. He'd been awake when they brought him back and seemed clear-headed. Apparently he fussed about missing the first week of school until the doctor pointedly told him if he didn't heal properly, there'd be problems down the road. They had a morphine pump hooked into his IV with a push button for him to administer it as needed. There's a sign of his maturity! He wouldn't start feeling the major pain for a couple of days. They did some kind of nerve block that will wear off slowly.

He woke up and was pleased to see me. We chatted until he suddenly started feeling hot. I said if it were me, that would be a hot flash. He latched onto that and joked about going through menopause just as a nurse walked in, stopped and left again. He thought that was funny. Then he said he was feeling numb pain. The instructions were to push the nurse button to let her know he was starting the morphine then push the morphine button. He was confused about which was which and pushed the wrong one first. We laughed about that. He thought he was clear-headed but really wasn't. I stayed a couple more hours visiting him and A. J drifted in and out of sleep, needing a couple more pushes of his morphine button. We could tell when it took effect because his eyelids dropped to half-mast. Saying something about it wasn't the right thing to do at one point because he got defensive about it. We assured him we were more concerned that he not be in pain than the fact he was using morphine. That's why they gave it to him, after all! His toes poking out of the bandages were bright red when I got there and had subsided to a more normal color by the time I left.

I went to my chiropractor to try and fix the other half of my pain from my wheelchair incident on Tuesday. They helped a bit. Then I did some gift shopping for J. I was trying to find a pencil puzzle book for him but didn't find that. I found other things that probably fit him better.

Then Eric and I went out for burritos and put our pajamas on before eating. I was taking my second bite when the phone rang. We both groaned. I was feeling like my nerves were jangling I was so tired. It was my shrink's wife/receptionist. Oh NO! I'd forgotten again! I actually said "Oh NO!" then looked at the clock. I still had time to get there! She was calling to say I could come in early because someone had canceled. She told me to get in the car and leave right away. I said I would and ate two more bites of burrito before I placed it in the fridge. I did pause long enough to get out of my pajamas and back into my clothes before I left. I got there very quickly since it was non-rush hour. The previous patient was just paying and I got right in. I was back home an hour after she called me. My burrito was still a tiny bit warm. I ate it without warming it so I could go to bed.

Slept in today. Held Squeakers most of the day as she slept. When she woke up to play, I uploaded my Thanksgiving videos on youtube.com so you can all see how pretty the lights are from Twin Peaks in San Francisco and how silly my cousins are. Eric said he saw her playing with her collar. I guess she's adapted to it!

I left the house to get pies and salad fixings for tomorrow. My family is celebrating Easter a week late. Filled Easter baskets with candy for tomorrow. Sadly, I couldn't find my plastic eggs so I couldn't put peeps in them to be hatched and eaten by my nephews. :(

I fixed dinner and after I ate it, Squeakers was ready for more snuggle time. She's so funny. She'll take over my chair and get very fiesty about keeping it to herself. She swears and swings at me like she's going to rip me to shreds if I don't leave her alone. When I scoop her up she lets me, though she growls. She'll let me hold her and pet her for a while, grousing all the time. Then she'll get up and sit on the foot rest for a while. I sang a snippet from a song that some notes from a commercial reminded me of - Eric was singing a different song the notes triggered for him and Squeakers came back up into my lap, trilling and purring. She loves it when I sing for some reason. We snuggled for most of the evening.

Tomorrow will be busy again. We need to be at A & J's house before noon to get Eric set up to stay with him for the afternoon. Then I'll go to Easter for a while and bring food back to them.

Ah well, I'm sleepy. Off to bed!
* In case you didn't know, J needed surgery because he sustained permanent nerve damage to his leg in the accident that orphaned him. As he grew the tendons in the paralyzed part of his left leg didn't stretch as they normally do so his foot twisted over sideways. He's been walking on the side of his foot for a while now, in significant pain over long distances.
This came out much darker on youtube than it was on my computer... darn it. You have to look quick to see my cousins Todd and Barry. Treasured memory!

The lights came out really well! Oh silly cousin Todd.

It was just after sunset. Wish I'd taken it from the very top instead of on the way down. I'll bet my sister does too! That's her back near the beginning.
