Harry Potter Party
Jul. 21st, 2007 02:18 pmHaving J here has expanded my horizons. He was invited to a Harry Potter Party last night that took place in a library across town. The inviter was the mom of one of his LJ and RL friends who is a librarian there. I meant to drop him off and pick him back up at midnight when it ended, but when we got to the door I was curious. He asked me to go in with him. I'd been gardening earlier and hadn't showered plus I was wearing cutoff jeans and a slightly rumpled t-shirt but what the heck! My hair probably hadn't been combed since lunchtime, either. heh
It was a cute party. The information desk had a stack cleverly folded maps that said on the front, "I swear I am up to no good."
There was a "Seeker Training" room where kids had to hold a gold-painted styrofoam ball with feathers stuck into either side on a spoon and go down a pathway being bombarded by teenagers punching balloons on strings at them. If they managed to keep the "seeker" on the spoon, they got a Quiddich sticker.
"Potions" was a huge mess. We didn't play. They had kids mixing up cornstarch and water (marked with mystical names) to play with that. We watched as the Professor dished out some baking soda and vinegar (also marked with potion component names from the book) to watch the cups foam over. The tables were puddled with potions, the floor was quickly becoming covered with potions. Everything in the room was used up and needed to be cleaned. I think they were out of stickers anyway.
"Divination" was where we found J's person. She was teaching tea leaf readings. We had to drink very nasty tea then swirl and dump the dregs into saucer. What remained in our cups were read by the other person. J is going on a trip very soon (sailboat near the edge) and in the more distant future has obstacles to overcome (mountains on the bottom of his cup). I am making changes very soon (shoe on edge) and have good conversations with people very soon. I can't remember what he saw for that.
One room was a trivia quiz. We stood there for one question. J didn't remember and I didn't want to take all the prizes from the kids. The prizes were Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans, sorted into flavors and labeled.
There was a crafts room where you could make wizard hats and wands. We skipped that. There was a jigsaw puzzle room with popcorn and more of the Every Flavor Beans for grabbing.
J was done after less than an hour. We gave our raffle tickets to a man with a son who reminded us of Neville and left.
Now I can say I've attended a Harry Potter Party!
