Mom's OK!

Surgery went really well yesterday. They had to snip her rib but the resident told me it would hurt her less then them pushing it out of the way. From the pain she was in last night, I have no idea if he was telling the truth. The trouble with them going in through her back is that she has to lie straight in the bed to keep her back from hurting. That means she lies right on her incision. They only had to take the upper lobe of her lung. It seemed mean to make her blow into the exercise thingy as soon as she really woke up. It hurt!

Even in her post-anethesia state last night, she was having difficult time moving herself up in the bed and admitted she would probably have a lot of trouble getting out of the waterbed.

Sherrie worked out the schedule for Monday through Friday and I'm only assigned Thursday night after class through Friday evening. Her husband Bruce is covering the possibility of picking Mom up on Monday to get her home, our Aunt June and Uncle Jim are covering Monday night through Tuesday afternoon, Bruce is covering Tuesday afternoon until she gets home from school, then Sherrie is covering Tuesday night through Wednesday night. I think Bruce is covering Wednesday night through when I get out of class. Maybe Jim and June are? Eric is uncomfortable participating so she left him out of it. My nephew Chris is willing to help, too. That leaves us the weekend to still work out. Chris's birthday is to be celebrated on Sunday. We'll do that at Mom's house.

I'm no longer worried about the pain making Mom mean. She was so sweet and grateful for me doing what needed to be done to get her comfortable last night! Poor thing was cleared to have water and food and they all just walked away. I had to go find her some water. The water mixed with moving around on heavy pain meds didn't go very well. She kept forgetting to use the suction thingy they gave her and insisted on throwing up in a basin. Good thing Eric wasn't there. He would have needed a basin himself! I left after doing everything I could for her. I needed to set up our recorder to catch Lost for her. She was going to try to watch it, but we both know she probably won't remember it.

Sherrie and Bruce went in a little later and the nurse said sprite would be a good thing to try. They didn't have any in ICU. ?? So S & B went down to the cafeteria and bought her Coke (at her request). That stayed down and Mom felt much better.

Today I need to go see her before I go to work, stopping to drag her garbage bin in from the street on the way.

She doesn't want my help clearing out Mom's guest bedroom. It seems like they're letting me off extremely easy on this. It makes it easier to get all my pre-final work done so I'm not going to complain much. I'll probably take a good part of the final weekend to make up for it.

Maybe Mom is as uncomfortable with the idea being with me as much as I'm uncomfortable with the idea of being alone with her. I do keep her at a distance to some extent.
