A sweet furry treat
Sep. 19th, 2006 10:16 pmThis morning I was over in the building with the environmental group fixing things on a few computers when I left an office to see the wildlife guy with a camera taking pictures of something small and brown cupped in another team member's hands. I was drawn like a magnet to see what it was.
A tiny jack rabbit bunny was snuggled into her hands. She said as she drove in the back gate she noticed a small brown lump in the middle of the road. It didn't move as she drove over it - careful not to run it over. She stopped and went back to see what it was. It was this bunny. It wasn't moving, but it was blinking and breathing. There were hawks circling overhead and no sign of the mommy jack rabbit. Even though she knew the wildlife guy would be angry with her (he wasn't) she couldn't just leave the little baby there! She worried he'd bite her. He didn't. She put him into her pocket where he happily snuggled in to warm up. He's so little he could hide in her hands if she put one over him.
Once he was warm he was moving just fine. The wildlife guy took a few pictures and said he'd take the little guy to the wildlife rescue after lunch. He has such long back legs! His ears didn't look like jack rabbit ears yet, but I've seen pictures of other bunnies his age and they have tiny ears. His were proportioned like regular rabbit ears already. He drank a little water when it was offered. His rescuer tried to rinse off one of her dirty hands and he panicked so I offered to hold him while she washed her hands. She let me!! The sweet baby climbed up my shirt to hide in my hair. I had to wash the mud off my shirt, but I didn't care.
He wasn't as soft as I expected. Jack rabbit fur is pretty coarse. He was all mottled with brown, black and tan fur. I have never seen a baby or even a juvenile jack rabbit before. They're SOOO CUTE!!
I emailed the wildlife guy for a photo but he hasn't responded. Hopefully I'll be able to share his adorableness with you. :)
