If I've learned anything about myself from this scripting class it's that I am a hardware person. Visual Basic Scripting is the nit-pickiest waste of time I've ever touched in my life. Even Java was easier. At least it WORKED when you had it coded correctly.

I took today off from work to try and get somewhere with Lab 2. My instructor asked me to email him the program that worked Wednesday night on one computer and suddenly couldn't find the text file I was trying to read on Thursday on ANY computer. I had it in the correct place and copied the path into my program just to make absolutely sure it was spelled correctly. I still haven't heard back from him. I thought it was my work PC because that's Windows 2000 and my laptop is XP. But when I got home and tried it on the test computer I have set up for this class, it wouldn't work. In frustration I tried it on my laptop again. Nope.

The only thing I can think of is dire updates from Microsoft that auto-installed on our systems Wednesday night. Why else would something that worked one night suddenly not work the next day on the very same computer?

I was already feeling down about my inability to grasp the syntax of this language. I understand the object-oriented part of it but the syntax makes me crazy.

My instructor suggested I take SQL a couple of weeks ago. Now I'm wondering if I should bother. Maybe I should put all my eggs into the networking basket. Programming switches and routers is nice and simple.. sort of. OK, it's not so simple but it's straight-forward. There's none of this object-oriented crap.

In my email to him last night I resisted the urge to beg him to give me a B with the promise that I'll never attempt to program again. I actually typed most of that then erased it from the email. Instead I asked for the drop-dead due date and told him I needed to get at least a C to keep my internship. He responded that everyone who stuck it out would get a decent grade. Whew!

So today, instead of attacking my vbs scripts, I slept until 11AM. I needed that because I've been cranking on the Lab until 2AM the last several nights. The alarm goes off at 6:30AM though I have to admit on Wednesday and Thursday I simply turned it off and slept until Eric's went off at 7:30AM. Then I got up and had a leisurely breakfast while reading email and watching yahoo videos.

This one made me feel happier. My favorite all-time sound is a baby's belly laugh. Imagine that in quadriphonic sound!

Laughing babies

If I had room to upload it, I'd also share one with an amazing dancing dog. If you want that one, let me know and I'll email it to you.

Another thing that helped just a few minutes ago was reading what [livejournal.com profile] summonillusion posted about scientific studies done on the effects of shrooms on a person's outlook on life and other medical aspects. I tried them once long, long ago with experienced hippie guides and the findings echoed my own highly spiritual experience.

It was a good and timely reminder for me about putting things into perspective. There is no need for me to do them again. Just remembering it is enough. I wish our government would pull their heads out of the sand about the positive aspects of many "illegal" substances. I may be clean and sober for the last 18 years but I don't regret trying shrooms. And if I need treatment for cancer someday, I won't refrain from using marijuana to get through chemo.. should my doctor prescribe it, of course!
