When we got DSL, we didn't have a telephone line in the "computer" room. Eric said he'd take care of it. I didn't like the way he did it but I trusted his expertise. After all, he does electronics design for a living. The telephone termination point is on the same side of the house as the computer room. He attached a piece of plenum cable to the box, and strung it up to the computer room window. We shut the window over it. It's probably better with the insulation we put in last fall because we cut a gap to fit it, but I didn't like the fact that the cable was crushed by the window or hanging loose between the box and the house. He said it was much simpler than trying to find the right spots from under the house.

Our DSL has been disconnecting a lot lately. Since we've been bugged incessantly by sales people wanting us to upgrade to add phone service and cable, we thought they were playing games with the low-end DSL people to get us to upgrade. Yeah, we're suspicious of providers. I contacted the support people yesterday during a time of connection and directly asked if we were being punished for not upgrading. He didn't respond for a long time. Because I know the support people are in India and because I was irritated I also said "We can't afford to upgrade right now. My career went overseas and I'm having to learn a new one. We have no extra money for upgrades."

He finally came back to tell me to check our phone jack. He said if we were using a jack splitter to remove it and try without it. I told him we had a dual jack plate, because we do. He suggested I remove the dual jack plate and try directly with the wall jack. I told him the dual jack plate was a wall plate with two separate jacks and I couldn't remove it because that would leave bare wires. Silence. OK, I said, we'll check our phone line and if that isn't the problem I'll start a new chat session.

Eric huffed and puffed and declared it couldn't be the wires. I have to give him a little slack this weekend. He just passed one kidney stone a couple of days ago that looked like it had broken off from something else. His pain hasn't subsided so he's now scheduled for a CT scan and got put on blood pressure meds. He's pretty much a space cadet this weekend.

Today I needed to do homework and the DSL was disconnected most of the time. This is a problem because my course material is online. I checked the phone on the same jack. Lo and behold, there was a lot of static. That's a DSL killer. The wires on the in house plate are fine, even though it's swinging in the wind instead of attached to the wall. I rewired it myself a while back when the wires broke and I taped the wire to the plate to keep it from pulling the wires.

Eric is watching the San Jose Gran Prix on TV. This is like a religious thing for him so I wouldn't think of asking him to not watch it. I checked the termination box myself. He'd done the same stupid thing with those wires. The entire length of the wire was hanging from the two small connection wires. I switched to a pair of healthy looking wires and did the same to the wall plate dangling inside the window in the computer room. On both ends, I used the unused wires to provide support for the cable so all the functional wires have to do is send signals.

Success!

I wonder if it's like the shoemaker's children? He saves his good stuff for work?
