Loki update
Jul. 9th, 2006 06:17 pmWe took him to the vet yesterday to have her look at a little lump he had on the side of his head. We mentioned the "cold" he came down with a week after coming home. His runny eye on the side with the lump had cleared up but Cactus had smacked him near the other eye that morning and now it was squinty and running a little. She stained both eyes and didn't see any trauma to the eyes themselves. She agreed with us that he seems younger than 2. She thinks he's somewhere between 1 and 2. She was concerned with his "Roman nose" and it did seem more humped than I remembered it being. She said some cats just had noses that shape but if it weren't his normal structure it could be an infection or fungus. We both agreed to check his profile pictures from the first night we had him when we got home. The lump on the side of his head was a claw hole that got a bit puffy. It was already healing.
She told him he was a very lucky kitty to find a home with us. :) Since he's so determined to get outside, we will get him vaccinated against feline leukemia after his runny eyes and sneezing clear up. We thought he was sneezing from snuffling all our dusty corners. Now we're wondering. She decided against antibiotics for now and gave us ointment for his eyes.
He's gained nearly a pound in the last three weeks. We thought he looked bigger. He's still growing like a weed! The brat found a bit of cat fur or lint while the vet was there and immediately ate it. I tried to get it out of his mouth saying, "Don't eat that!" Eric rolled his eyes and told her that's one reason we think he's still a kitten. He eats everything. "Don't eat that!" is a common phrase around our house lately.
We mentioned his beautiful spot pattern when he's in the sun. She said he could very well be an Ocicat. He's shaped just like one she treats and has a similar coat texture and personality. oooh! cool! We've always looked at Ocicats and drooled a little but buying cats isn't our style. We rescue sweet fur babies who need homes. We might have a black Ocicat!
When we got him home I brought up the profile picture. His nose is definitely swollen. I remember thinking the way the flash lit up his nose looked a bit weird, as if he had a lump. Now I know he did have a small lump that has gotten bigger. Cryptosporidium, one of the things it could be causes diarrhea - which he had for the first several days with us - and sneezing - which has been going on the whole time, and is communicable to humans and other cats. In healthy adult humans it causes fatigue, flu symptoms and diarrhea for a few days. Eric has been feeling ill for a few days and just had the last symptom starting yesterday. I've been feeling tired and not great for a while, but just wrote it off to stress and the injections. Poor little guy. No wonder his purr is so quiet. His nose is swollen.
He's been "helping" me try to get my test computer up and running today. He helped by lying on the ESC key and punching caps lock a few times. He tried to bite the keys while I was typing, tried to kill the mouse and when I wouldn't let him he lay down on the cable so I couldn't move it. He climbed up onto my arm a few times to snuggle his head against mine, climbed halfway up my shoulder to bite the hair clip I'm wearing and gave me mighty head butts that nearly knocked my glasses off.
When I was on the phone to the animal shelter to ask them to please fax his medical history to our vet, he managed to hide her card so I had to shove his furry little body around to find it. This of course, was thought to be great fun so he wrapped his entire body around my arm and started chewing on my wrist. The clerk heard me saying "Ouch! Ouch! Don't bite your momma! Loki, let momma get the card! Don't eat it! No! That's not for kitties!" The beastie actually drew blood he got so excited.
After the phone call he wanted more snuggles and climbed up onto my shoulder to bite at my hair clip again. Then he pressed his face into my neck purring and hugged me. Awwww, sweet baby. I can't stay mad at him for nipping too hard. His teeth are his only front-end tools since he has no claws.
The next door neighbor's five year old daughter tried to pet him on Friday. He's terrified of children. He loved Jonathan, but then to him I think Jonathan is a grown-up. We wonder now if he was in a household with wild kids and no claws to protect himself. That would explain his roughness with us. Maybe he ran away! maybe maybe.. we'll never know.
He's going back to the vet tomorrow along with a copy of that profile shot from day one. I sure hope whatever it is is easily cured!
** EDIT **
I forgot to mention we noticed he's left-pawed when he was slapping at Cactus this morning. His current full name is Lefty Loki Moose Montgomery.
