I shook hands with Scott Hubbard, the out-going head of NASA/Ames this afternoon, twice! They had a goodbye bash for him today. Faten and I went over to check it out and ended up staying until it was over. He was speaking when we got there and afterwards people who wanted to shake his hand and speak to him lined up. Whenever I've heard him speak, he's always stayed so positive. He fought hard to keep funding for the projects at NASA/Ames because he wanted people to keep their jobs. He is a man of integrity. It's so rare these days to meet someone of that rank in an organization who is such a nice guy. I wanted to tell him how he inspired me every time I saw him speak so I got in line. I introduced myself to him with my intern status, told him how he inspired me and mentioned how he'd started his career there the same year I started my career as a programmer. His career there lasted longer than mine did. I told him SETI was lucky to get him. We both wished each other luck and shook hands again.
The NASA/Ames Jazz band played and after the line of people was gone, Scott jammed with them on electric guitar. He's really good!
Toward the end of the party I saw a woman struggling to hold a bunch of helium balloons she'd pulled off a bottle of wine as she started on the next one and got up to help her. These were the centerpieces on every table in the room, so there were about 20 of them to dismantle. She was fine as it turned out but she did need help pulling the balloons off the bottles. I helped her until they were all finished. By the time I finished the bunch I was holding were lifting my hand! whee! That was fun. :) She tied her bunch around mine to make one huge bunch and walked around the room with them, enjoying the fun of them.
Faten told me that was Scott's secretary and she was retiring from NASA so she could follow him to SETI. She told Faten that when you have a great boss, you follow him when he leaves. I helped her untangle the balloons from a chandelier before we left. LOL
