I woke up to that song in my head this morning. Can't stay asleep with that peppy tune popping! It made me realize I don't own any Peter, Paul and Mary! I started singing their songs in harmony with my sister when I was a youngster. I knew all the words to the songs in their biography on the local college station last night. As a teenager, I used to sit on my front lawn playing my guitar and sing Puff the Magic Dragon and other songs to the children of my neighborhood. I guess I did it enough times at family reunions that my cousin's kids remember it because they always say that's what they remember from back then. They're parents themselves now. Last night I tried to sing along but dissolved into tears when it got to the part about dragons live forever, but not so little boys. Gee, that is one sad song. Poor Puff! Of course the visuals in the special didn't help. The children were all singing along and their parents were hugging them and kissing their heads with tears in their eyes. Even Paul Stukey knew it was too sad because he called out "PRESENT TENSE!" so they'd sing about Puff playing now instead of playing in the past. *wipes tears*
I started crying this morning as I told Eric about it. He said, "It's a song about a pretend dragon!" and I said, "Yeah *sob* I know. Can you tell I've been off my hormones for a week? *sniffle* I'm mood-swinging like crazy! I noticed it *sniffle* last night," and we both laughed. Back on them today. Thank goodness.
I didn't know that Paul Stukey wrote The Wedding Song for Peter's wedding. He sang it solo in the special. Eric and I both love that song so much we had my cousin Kathleen sing it during our ceremony. I also didn't know the story of the group. A producer put the three of them together. Paul and Mary tried singing a little together before they got together with Peter and it was OK, but nothing special. The first song they sang as a trio the next day was Mary had a Little Lamb. They said the magic was there for that and the rest is history. I also didn't realize that every album they produced had at least one song for kids included. Or how much they were personally involved in the revolutionary changes to our society in not only the anti-war movement of the 1960's but also in civil rights both here and in El Salvador.
They took a break from each other for a number of years and when they got back together for a reunion tour they were shocked to see their fan base was not only still there, but had added a whole new generation who knew all their songs.
Wow! Can you imagine how it must feel to have your body of work touch so many people deep in their hearts?
I dream of making a positive difference in people's lives like that.

Nov. 14th, 2005 01:06 pmHow is it I can have 20 socks and not a pair in the pile? This is especially frustrating when I've taken to buying three or four identical pairs at a time just so I can find two matching socks at any one time.
I have a bone out of place in my right foot. It's near or in the arch of my foot and is attached to the second from the smallest toe. OWWWW. I've figured out the running shoes I bought last year to keep up with the special ed kids (who took off running without notice) hold my feet in a curved position and seem to make the pain worse. Bleh. Now I'm down to one pair of close toed shoes to wear to work.
No work today, so it's sandals with socks! YAY! Hopefully nobody will notice the socks are slightly different shades of navy blue. *sigh*
