Jonathan is HERE!
Jul. 16th, 2005 03:23 pmI called him on Thursday to see if he wanted to come to the Cosmic Impact event at NASA that's happening today. After a lot of quick planning and approval seeking at both ends, he ended up taking Amtrak in that same night and he went to work with me on Friday. I'm hoping to broaden his horizons as to what he can do with his interest and talent in math, physics and science. He says he wants to teach. The pay rates of high school teachers has already ruled that out. I don't think he realizes university professors aren't well paid, either. We had just toured the flight simulator all the astronauts train in and the centrifuge on Thursday, so there weren't any field trips on Friday. At lunch time I walked him around our end of the huge wind tunnel I work under. We did wander through a warehouse attached to it to see odd stuff that's stored there.
During the day, my boss kept coming through and giving him junk he'd picked up at trade shows. Jonathan went to the gift shop with Pearlinda and Joe when they wanted to buy things for people. Jonathan came back with a lucite paperweight with a space shuttle etched inside it in 3D. After the workday, I asked my boss if it would be all right for me to take Jonathan into the abandoned wind tunnel across the street. He said he'd let us in, but ended up giving us the whole tour. On the way out, we passed by a file cabinet with a small pile of NASA frizbees on top and my boss grabbed one, handed it to Jonathan and told him to hide it under his shirt just in case a person with a bad attitude was around. LOL
In class today, I didn't wait around for the woman next to me to finish her labs so I could do parts of mine that required a partner. She took a cigarette break about every half hour and got farther and farther behind. Instead, I sought out a computer to communicate with that was up to speed on all the settings so I could get my work done. I completed all the work and got out of the 7 hour class in 3.6 hours! I think Jonathan was a little disappointed because he assumed he'd have to stop playing Sims2 when I walked in the door. No, my shoulder is extremely sore. I need a break from gaming. So I'm in at the desktop while he plays Sims2 and he and Eric are cracking up at the weird videos on a website Eric loves.
At 6pm tonight, we'll go to the public exhibit area near the front gate for the Cosmic Impact event. The first hour is viewing the exhibit, the second is three speakers talking about things that might impact the earth and how we're going to avoid them. Two of them are scientists and one is an astronaut. Cool beans! There will probably be hundreds of people there. They've advertised the event in the newspaper. Then at 8:30pm they're going to have a field of telescopes available for viewing objects in space.
My sister and BIL are going and so is my dear friend Karen with her son Woody and even her husband who rarely goes anywhere!
I hope it cools down a bit. Whew! it's hot. We're in triple digits today.
Jonathan may stay the week. He hasn't decided. We'll have to figure out different things for him to do. Maybe he can visit people for a day or just hang out here at home. He's 15, so he's completely able to amuse himself non-destructively! Joe said he thinks they're going to put a model into the arc jet this week, so if they do I'll take him to work with me again so he can see it.
Jonathan and his aunt will be moving sometime in the next two to three weeks. His uncle will move after he finishes fixing the house up so they can sell it.
