Tired and livid
Jul. 9th, 2005 04:40 pmThe class I thought was supposed to last from 9AM-1PM for two units of credit is actually from 9AM-5PM and four units of credit. Ugh. It actually only lasts until we finish the lab work and I finished at 3:30PM. When I got home there were a few pieces of mail on my chair. One of them was a folded card from the registrar of voters.
It had a whole bunch of languages asking if they had my correct address on the front. I opened it to see what it was. By law, they have to provide voter materials in anyone's preferred language. I don't really agree with that. I think part of being a citizen should be learning the language of the country you've adopted, but that's not my decision.
The card stated that they asked people at the November 2004 election to state their language preference. I'm guessing only those who spoke with non-US accents were asked because nobody asked me. Why would they? It's obvious the local variety of English is my native tongue.
The card went on to say they were going to keep sending out survey cards until every voter responded. Oh, and you have to either mail it or fax it to them. WTF??? That made me angry. I'm not going to waste my tax dollars with superfluous postage for the stupid card. I don't own a fax machine and I'm certainly not going to use the one at work for that.
I went to their website to fire off an angry online response only to read that they're going to send English materials to EVERY VOTER and a SECOND COPY of the same materials in the person's preferred language.
OK. Now I'm LIVID. TWO COPIES? To provide an English copy for people who DON'T SPEAK ENGLISH? How many trees will that kill? How much additional cost in printing and mailing will that rack up?
I can tell you they got a very angry email from me. Eric chimed in a few things I added. I gave them my info in case they want to check off English for me. Eric already threw his away in disgust so I didn't have his barcode number to give them.
Grrrr!
( email text... in case you want to read what I wrote to them. )
