Neighbor on the news....
May. 7th, 2005 06:28 pmWe never got the call from the reporter about his story airing last night, so we missed the seeing what happened until tonight when a followup happened with another reporter.
I was at the computer lab at school all afternoon and pulled in with Arby's Reuben sandwiches for dinner. A news crew with a satellite dish was setting up across the street from my neighbor's house. It wasn't the reporter I met last week so I wondered if another channel was picking the story up. Our newspaper was still sitting in the driveway from this morning, so I picked it up and took it in right away just in case the camera picked up our yard. I came back out and looked for a network or channel designation on the van, but there wasn't anything visible. I called out to the cameraman who held up a his hand in a stop motion then after a few seconds called out to turn on channel 7 (ABC) because there was going to be a live broadcast in a few minutes. Same network. Who is this guy and why is he stealing the other guy's story? Humm?
I trotted up to our front door and told Eric to turn the TV on and to tune it to channel 7, then I got my books and our dinner from the car.
Eric said he'd heard voices a while ago, but didn't know what it was about. The news report told us what it was. They're saying a union boss wants to fire a bunch of security officers for not paying their dues. They're not paying dues because they claim they aren't getting the representation they're paying for. On tape from when Eric heard the voices, a group of the union members tried to confront our neighbor, who isn't home. They said they were pretty sure he was home, but I know he isn't because his other car is missing. Then they interviewed a couple of them and were angled so our yard was in the background! Hey! Don't associate our house with this guy! Then they showed the tape shot during the news crew ambush when I was at my doctor's appointment. My neighbor claims they had a board meeting four or five months ago and the chief complainant was at the meeting. He refused to say who was on the board, saying "That's all I have to say," as he drove off. There was a small clunk sound that I'm guessing was the microphone hitting the edge of his window.
Eric and I both are a little worried about this and hope it doesn't become violent. The one thing I was glad about was that the guys they interviewed blocked the view of our newspaper sitting in the driveway.
