Feb. 28th, 2005

I was out of the house five evenings in the last week. Monday and Wednesday were my Java class, in which I'm behind again. Tuesday and Thursday were engineering sound for voice-over classes and Friday, followed by all day Saturday, I was a student in a voice-over class. The last two Thursday nights were engineering for the agent I want to have represent me. Now that we've become friendly on a working basis, maybe he'll be more receptive to adding me to his stable of voice-over actors. *hopes* As soon as I get that animation demo back, I'll make new CDs and send off a packet with cookie bribes.

The class I was in is called SF Connection. There were three instructors for the three segments of the class. Friday night was a casting director for animations and video games. She works mostly with union talent. :(

Saturday morning was an ad writer from one of the best ad agencies in San Francisco. He also uses mostly union talent. :(

Saturday afternoon was a different story! Ok, forgive me for not knowing sports, but our instructor was the son of Bill Walsh who didn't go into football. He has his own ad agency and they avoid using union talent! Whee! I got off on the right foot with him. He got tied up battling a copier at his office while trying to make packets for us and ended up being 30 minutes late. He rushed in all stressed out and immediately started apologizing. I smiled at him and said "You're here now. Take a deeeep breath." He looked relieved, asked my name and I told him while shaking his hand. He did relax and stayed over an hour past when the class was supposed to end! Oh, I didn't mention, he's incredibly gorgeous! If I were 20 years younger and single... My aunt asked me if he looked like his dad and I had no clue. She said his dad was extremely good looking. My uncle said he wasn't sure he agreed. We got a good laugh out of that. When I got home, I checked out Bill Walsh's picture. Yes, his son looks almost exactly like him!

I was so self-concious about a zit on my chin. Gotta quit tasting cheesy food without taking lactase, darn it.

Anyway, it was a great weekend for me in class. There's a saying about how the hungriest actor gets the part. Our desperate times may be helping out in that regard. All three instructors told us who they would have cast out of our sessions. I was chosen every time! Woot! There were some darker characters and moods to be portrayed. The fact that I was bookable on them is a big change from a few years ago. Desperate times can be useful for finding those dark moods.

Ok, so we're not completely desperate. Eric was about to tap into dire emergency savings for our bills when he found out the two patent applications he's on at HP have cash bonuses attached. This is the first time he is listed on patent applications! We hate using his bonus money to pay bills, but at least we don't have to touch our dire emergency savings. I've put the Christmas money my mom gave me that I was hoarding into my bank account to cover my overdraft account payment. That's my present this year. :(

Today I'll hear from the school district if I got one of the jobs I interviewed for. After 5pm I can check the CBEST website for my test results.

In the meantime, I really need to get the java lab done that was due a week-and-a-half ago. There's another due very soon that I haven't started on.

And do dishes.
And mail paperwork to Eric's dad.

You have an extremly good understanding of beginner, intermediate, and advanced level commonly confused English words, getting at least 75% of each of these three levels's questions correct. This is an exceptional score. Remember, these are commonly confused English words, which means most people don't use them properly. You got an extremely respectable score.

YAY! You can get 80 points on each part. I got 68 on reading and 67 on math. There's no mention of the essay part of the exam.

Here's what the body of the email says:
Note that each section score is reported on a scale ranging from 20 to 80. For the Reading and Mathematics sections, your score is based on the total number of questions you answered correctly. The passing score for each section of the CBEST is a scaled score of 41. A total CBEST score of 123 is required for passing status. It is possible, however, to pass the CBEST with a scaled score of as low as 37 on one or two sections, provided that the total score is 123 or higher. It is not possible to pass the CBEST if any section score is below 37, regardless of how high the total score may be.

So unless I got less than 37 on the essay, I passed!

It's a good thing. I just got a call from the school district. I wasn't selected for any of the openings. If I couldn't get hired into a classroom where the teacher specifically WANTED me, there's no chance I'll get hired there at all.
