Yesterday I was able to enroll in an Intro to Java programming class at my community college. At first I was a little nervous about it because the instructor made a big deal about people having had to take intermediate C or C as a second language because we really need to understand pointers. I started to take Intermediate C the year I met Eric. Pointer arithmetic had my head spinning and the instructor only showed up twice out of the first four classes so I dropped the class and never looked back. I was working, right?

For about an hour yesterday I thought that was going to bite me. When the class took a break halfway through and she asked all the people wanting to add to come up to get add stickers from her I got at the end of the line. I wasn't sure I belonged in the class and needed to talk to her about it. I didn't want to force anyone who had the prerequisite classes to wait while we discussed it.

It turned out she was just trying to scare off the ones who didn't understand the concept of pointers at all or who hadn't had the advanced logic and debugging instruction given in the prerequisite classes. I won't need pointer arithmetic. Beginning C that I did take plus my sixteen years of full time programming more than qualifies me to take the class. The second half of yesterdays class was her first lecture. She's spoon-feeding us each aspect of the language as she goes along and I was surprised at how much C I do remember from way back when. She seemed anxious to have me in the class. We were the only middle aged women in the room. This is going to be fun!

The lines in the bookstore were outrageous. I was going to go this morning to beat the rush but couldn't go to sleep last night. I slept too late. I'll have to go in tomorrow morning instead and buy my parking permit at the same time. Those are the only things you can't do online. Oh well.

Well, that's not entirely true. I also couldn't correct my name online. Since I hadn't married Eric yet when I last attended classes, I'm still listed as Vermillion. They won't change that until things calm down a bit in the student services office.
