Busy busy busy
Dec. 2nd, 2003 01:55 pmTook a little time out to check in here. Thanksgiving was a lovely day in San Francisco. My larger car means it's harder to park on my uncle's street. I dropped a droopy Eric at the door with all of our stuff and found a place to park down the hill and around the corner. My dad was sitting on my shoulder coaching me on parallel parking, or at least it felt like he was. The method he taught me works so well that I was into that spot in one try. Food was great as always! Much laughter and visiting happened. My aunt's best friend from her young nursing school days came to spend the day with us. She's fighting cancer for the second time. She's a lovely lady. I hope she kicks it! Eric and I were both coughing so we skipped the trip up the hill at dusk. Climbing the hill from the car was about as much hill climbing as I was up to. We all stayed until about 10pm and left.
Friday we were totally wiped out. We mostly slept all day. I was supposed to go to the Gem & Jewelry Show with Sue to find a pin or pendant of a sun with a face, but I was nearly comatose all day. I did manage to call about the time she wanted to leave to let her know not to wait for me. She shopped for my jewelery for me! She called and said she'd found a sterling silver sun with a mother of pearl face pendant. She needed approval to go over the $10 budget I'd set because it was $12.00. I approved the increase. Haven't had a moment to see her and exchange money for pendant, but I can't wait to see it!
Saturday my mom and sister both begged off of going to the 90th birthday party of cousin Al in Oakdale. Mom was too out of it from Thanksgiving still and Sherrie was only going if Mom was. I overslept myself and considered skipping it, but I knew "my boys" would miss me if I didn't show up, and my cousin Todd was going with his wife and Uncle Jim. I don't miss any time with Todd if I can help it! Eric finally helped me wake up. Mmmmmmmmm. Love waking up that way! *swoon*
Showered, hopped in the car and ate on the road. Drove as fast as I could safely and even so it took two hours to get there. I missed half the party. Oh well, I made it there. Cousin Al is my late cousin Judy's dad. She and I were so close and I'm so involved with her boys that their family treats me as if I were one of their own. Todd hadn't met the boys before, so he got to know them. I've got several pictures of Todd with Jon, the younger son, making faces at the camera. LOL
On the way back I stopped at a produce stand that was advertising lots of fruit including persimmons. We're big Fuyu persimmon fans. We used to get more than we could eat by picking my aunt's tree for her. She passed away in August 2002, so the tree is not available to us anymore. Our own tree is now two years old. About four more years until it starts bearing. Until then we're having a few from the grocery store from time to time. The last ones I bought there were $1.25 apiece! The produce stand had them 5 for a dollar. Plus they were picked when they were ripe, which means much better flavor. I stuffed 40 into bags and bought them. Yay!
Sunday I was comatose again. All that driving wears me out. Since I'm avoiding caffiene these days, it's hard to fight the tiredness. I went to install our wireless network because Eric is chicken to try it and found the box empty. I had to ask him where the wireless router was. It was sitting loose in a big box of books and other stuff he has in the livingroom with other boxes also full of assorted stuff. All I found was the router and the driver CD. I felt lucky to have found that! There was no sign of the instructions.
When I went into the computer room to install them, there was a popping noise coming from the side of my monitor... or Braticus's pile of papers and food crumbs under it. My first thought was that he'd peed in the monitor or chewed the wires until they were arcing. So I decided the first order of business was to clean up the desk. I took away his rat's nest and cleared his pile from behind my desk then slid under it to look up at the cables. Only a phone wire not in use was chewed. I thought I'd just get it out of there and tried to gently pull it. That waa the final straw for the external amp I had for my 486 system, it fell down next to my head along with the printer switch box. Much cussing ensued. Using my back scratcher and the string the cats have been playing with, I hauled each one up, scooting under the desk to tie them and scooting back out to pull them up. Just as both of them were on the desktop, I bumped a speaker and it fell. The same technique worked to get it back up. By this time I was pouring sweat and took a break to drink lemonade. Eric said he'd been staying away from the computer room because he could hear me cussing and carrying on. I guess I should be grateful that they all missed my head and that the popping sound stopped. Later I found a grain beetle. It had been making the noise. It's outside now.
Finally I was ready to tackle the router itself. I used their installation CD to do each step. My computer came up on the internet with no problem at all.
He felt guilty about losing the instructions and downloaded the user guide and tried to print it for me. The top three lines of every page were cut off. Why? who knows? Then we discovered the user guide was on the driver CD. Getting the thing working with my PC was a piece of cake. Getting it working with the laptops wasn't. They're still not up. About 11pm, I emailed my cousin Barry (the network/internet guru and Todd's brother) and told him exactly what I'd done and what was and wasn't working.
Monday I started creating the audio book catalog in the morning to afternoon. Then I went to my chiropractor, provided transportation for a friend to pick up her car and went shopping for the items we needed. I also went to Diddams party store and found sun stickers for my cookie containers! Yay! I got home, put the groceries away and cooked dinner. After dinner I read Barry's response and tried to get the wireless network going.
I've been scrambling trying to do everything at once. I'm putting together the catalog of audio books to take to independent booksellers, trying to finish our Christmas card, trying to get the wireless network going in the house and trying to clean the house a little at a time. All this while trying not to let my owl tendencies rule my life. It's so easy to stay up until 3am. But then I have to get up to get stuff done while other people are are available! Sleepy me.
( medical appointment info = TMI? )
Tonight I'll engineer the booth for a voice-over class for the first time! Thank goodness I'll have the actual engineer looking over my shoulder. This should be fun.
Gotta do the dishes and find my engineer binder before I go and gosh time is flying by today!
