Wow! What a class!
Apr. 17th, 2003 01:25 pmI started a new voice-over class last night called Invitational Advanced Phoning It In. The school connects us via phone line to THE main talent agency in LA and we work with the agents that way. I've had this class before, but talent agents never stay in one place for long so last night was a brand new person for me. She's their ANIMATION agent!!!! WHOOOOOO HOOOOOO!
She gave each of us three characters to do. She said to do the one that was hardest first, the middle hard one second and the one we thought we'd totally nail last.
My three (in the order I performed them) were an asian-american spy type woman (20ish from an interactive computer game), a young female elephant who has just been given the ability to sing, dance and speak (feature cartoon) and a sweet adventurous eight year old boy (interactive game).
I did spy the way I'd interpreted her. The agent said that interactive characters were the hardest to do and started to direct me one way with her. I pointed out that I'd interpreted the character's reactions from points of reference in the script. She agreed with me on them and changed the direction a little to accomodate the points. I performed it again. She loved the last 2/3 but wanted me to adjust the beginning a bit. Then she said it was "Perfect!"
Next round, I did the elephant in one take. No direction was given. She just said it was "dead-on perfect!" She even said "Wow!"
Third round I totally blew her socks off with my favorite little boy character. Again, no direction because she said it was perfect!
Since we're supposed to take our worst script to work on for an "audition" in two weeks, she assigned me my first script to work on, though she said it didn't need much more work. We'll see!
I don't remember anyone else doing their characters in one take.
This is a four week class. Next week we'll have a different agent on the phone. I wonder what aspect of voice-over will be the focus next week?
The best part of this class? One person gets chosen to spend an entire day at the agency in LA auditioning for everything all day! One of my friends did it and landed THREE jobs!
