Controversy

This group of women going on the Disney trip includes of 8 of us who have known each other since high school or earlier. After high school, we split into two groups: those who married early and those who didn't. My group had five people. The other three attended the same church and they added the others through there.

This is causing problems with the list of reunion dates for the back of our trip shirts. I started off by simply listing the events the entire core group participated in starting with high school grad nite at Disneyland. I asked for suggestions because I had run out of creative steam by that point.

Hoo boy, watch what you ask for!

They all hated the "Slumber Party Posse" I had in the title. Most of them didn't know what I meant by that and said it made them want to get lassos and chaps. Alternates were suggested and nobody agreed on what it should change to. OK, gone. Now the title is simply

BOOMER BABES
REUNION DATES

From simple "40th Birthday Slumber Party" we went to "40th Birthday "Monkees" Reunion" and even then somebody wanted to change THAT to an entire sentence that would be too long. I said no.

Karen and I brainstormed to come up with other cute names for our events. Her 60's costume party turned into 60's Flower Power "Love-In"

We changed our Hilton slumber party to "Hilton Holiday Hangout"

There were complaints that the Grad Nite listed our high school name and had a specific date when some of the others went to a different high school and went to Grad Nite on a different night. Fine. I left it at 1973 - June and took out the high school name. Then she wanted it to say "Grad Nite Freedom Celebration." OK. Whatever.

One of them wanted me to get rid of the state abbreviation after the city names. She said it wasn't necessary. I like them there. I didn't address that yet.

Someone said we really should list at the very top:
1969-1973 Endless Nights of Sleepless Slumber Parties
Done.

Then someone from the other group insisted we include their 30th birthday gathering in the list. Excuse me? Nobody from my half of the group was invited to that. I diplomatically explained how I'd chosen dates to include and thought it was only right to list the things the entire core group attended and if we started adding events from before the entire group reformed we wouldn't have space to list them all. Another of them chimed in with how their date HAD to be there because it was what started the whole reunion idea for the 40th. I talked it over with Karen. We agreed that if I were adding THEIR date that we'd have to add OUR trip to Seattle because our entire half of the group was there. Compromise reached.

So I made all the changes and additions, got rid of the line in the title that was causing problems to give us more room and have emailed the plain text of what I've got to the entire group. I explained that to be fair to both groups, I added both dates and that I'd left out our camping trips that qualified in the interest of space. I also said I left the "CA" after the city names because people reading our shirts might not know where the cities are located plus I've added a "WA" site to the list now. I was glad to have a reason they couldn't argue about.

If nobody has any earth-shaking objections, I'm calling it done and will put it onto the products in my cafepress.com store.

ARGH. It's a good thing I'm taking hormones that ease the mood swings. LOL

Here's what it now says with indents below each date.

Ye gods. Nothing should ever be this complicated. I applaud you for seeing it through. I would have retreated long ago!

After the hours I put into the graphic, there's no way I would have walked away. I'm very proud of how it came out!

One year I did the graphic for our family reunion T-shirts and everyone loved it. The next year it got political. I threw up my hands in disgust and there were no t-shirts that year! The year after, my cousin dealt with all of that. Since then, we have not had T-shirts!

This year the politics center around food and location. I'm staying clear of it, since 1) if there's food I'm happy, and 2) as long as the location is reasonably central to everyone, and it is, I'm good.

See how easy I am? =)

heh

oh, by the way, I'm hurt that I wasn't included in the Disneyland invite even though I didn't know you in high school. And even though I'm not going, I want my high school's name included and MY grad date of 1971.

LOL! I thought about inviting you! Do you really want to be part of the group after reading about them? I'm beginning to wonder, myself. teehee!

[identity profile] sugarplumkitty.livejournal.com 2005-05-10 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not letting the Smith family one change. Everyone loved last year's so that's how it stays with only the year changing.

j/k! I just wanted to torture you a little =)
I want the extent of my involvement to be hearing about it when you return!

You'll get that! Oh! I see on my calendar that the pot-luck is tomorrow night. When I said I'd go, it was before I had all my classes settled for this quarter. Thursday night is lab night and since I'll be in Anaheim the following Thursday I really can't miss lab. I hope I'm not hurting your feelings by not showing up.

That's okay. I'm not planning to go either. It's gotten really political and I don't want to be a part of all of that.

Man, I'm sorry to hear that. They sounded so good!

The relationship between the AA and Al-Anon groups isn't that great in our area, unfortunately. It's too bad.

ah i understood that you wanted ALL the things on one shirt. I misunderstood.
They look really nice.
